The Dyslexia Tutoring Center offers support to struggling readers and spellers. We provide instruction that is multisensory, structured and sequential, explicit, cumulative, prescriptive, and diagnostic. The instruction our center offers is deeply rooted in the Science of Reading and uses instruction that is based on the Orton-Gillingham method.
As part of our outreach model, we created this course primarily for parents and caregivers of children who are struggling to read and/or spell, but the course is open to anyone in a child's life who wants to learn more about Dyslexia in a supportive environment.
Your child doesn't have to have a Dyslexia diagnosis to benefit from this course. In fact, this course was actually created for those parents who aren't exactly sure why their child is struggling to read. If you feel overwhelmed trying to figure out why your child is struggling -- we're here to help! As parents share the types of courses they would like to see, we'll create them and add them to our offerings.
Hi, I’m Meghan Volk!
I discovered my passion for tutoring struggling readers and dyslexic students after my children were diagnosed with dyslexia (a hereditary condition that makes reading difficult for otherwise, very bright children).
Despite having a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Student Development Administration, I had no clue why my child was struggling to read. After doing a lot of research, I quickly realized my son, and many struggling readers like him, need the right kind of instruction to learn how to read and spell.
I learned about the Orton-Gillingham method and the Barton Reading & Spelling System, specifically. I created a Parent Empowerment Course to help parents learn a little more about Dyslexia and ways to help struggling readers.
In my professional life, I've worked with youth of all ages for the better part of two decades. I've worked with students within education spanning K-12 all the way up and through college as well as within foster care.
